on the trail // hiking hoch-ybrig

A few weeks ago, one of my sister’s best friend’s sister, Hannah, visited for the weekend during a summer trip to Europe. She took the opportunity for a little detour from a stay in Berlin and we made sure she had an adventure to remember in Switzerland. However, after the hike we took, I’m not sure when she’ll be back.

It was our first trip up to Hoch-Ybrig, a location mostly selected because it was new to us, not too far from Zurich, and with good views but also just light hiking (especially as Hannah was hiking in Converse). Hoch-Ybrig is just a beautiful 45 minute drive from our place through the country and along the gorgeous Sihlsee. We chose to ride the chair-lift up and then walked along the ridge to Sternen.

freitag favorites + nesting

Happy weekend friends! I’m thrilled for a weekend and another longer chance to put my feet up and focus on staying cool and doing a little more nesting at home. Last weekend the crib arrived and while I anxiously await the arrival of the rest of the furniture, I’m focusing my nesting efforts around the rest of our place, cleaning, organizing, and finally making a few other decisions we’ve put off. We installed some new shelving in our dining room and have a few more projects in the works so I should have another *haus to home* post for you again soon. Read more

cretan holiday

This summer is already flying by in a whirlwind of planning, working, and nesting, and I’m thankful that we took the opportunity early in the summer to plan a getaway to Crete.  Martin’s competition and coaching at the European team championships was not only well-timed, falling just at the end of my second trimester, but also in a location providing the perfect combination of relaxing beach getaway, culture, and good food, just a few hours flight from Zürich. freitag favorites + summer heat

Martin is off to Ticino for a weekend of training/coaching and I’m already busy trying to stay as cool as possible. This summer is off to a hot, hot start, and without true AC anywhere except perhaps the grocery store this pregnant lady is limited to keeping cool with cold showers and lazing in front of the fan with her feet up. I’ve already been wishing I was back in Crete with this view: Read more

take me back to turkey

Last month’s trip to Turkey was the first vacation we’ve taken since our honeymoon in August 2011 which was longer than 3 days, not scheduled around proximity to a hammer ring, and did not involve visiting family. Now don’t get me wrong, we have taken many longer vacations, and I absolutely love seeing family and friends anywhere and I don’t even mind a well-planned trip including hammer throwing, but this time it really was so nice to just have more than a week of sun-filled, easy relaxation. away in appenzellerland

Next week we will be chasing the last of summer to Turkey’s Bodrum peninsula where today’s weather forecast “plentiful sunshine.” We have planned a week of nearly nothing except beach time along the Aegean and will end with a few days wandering the sights in Istanbul. I cannot think of anything I need more than this to top of my summer as Zürich’s summer forecast was essentially plentiful rain. Read more

last summer getaway

DSC01504-19

Just two weeks ago, I left dark and stormy Zürich on a Thursday morning to join Martin in Nice for our last summer getaway. Martin’s final big meet of the season, Les Jeux de la Francophonie, was the perfect excuse for a long weekend along the French Riviera, and after just 45 minutes in the air I was already looking down on the last summer sun sparkling of the Mediterranean. I was content with nothing more than just a weekend alternating lazing by the pool with lazing by the sea. And so that is what we did. (See instagram for more photos from this spot.) Read more
